Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18) came close to taking a win in his first race of the season when he finished a bike length behind Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) in the Trofeo Felanitx – Ses Salines – Campos – Porreres (UCI 1.1) in Mallorca.
An early break of three riders went clear, made up of Grischa Janorschke (Team Roth), Domingos Goncalves (Team Caja Rural-RGA) and Eneko Lizarralde (Euskadi Basque Country – Murias). However, they were reeled in with 35 kilometres remaining.
The race then came down to a bunch sprint with Greipel taking the win ahead of Bennett with Edvald Boassen Hagen (Team Dimension Data) taking third.
The Challenge Mallorca continues tomorrow with the Trofeo Pollenca-Port de Andratx over a hilly 162 kilometre course.
Here’s a brief video of the sprint.
