L’Equipe have produced some nice graphics which show where in the world professional cyclists come from. The statistics are for cyclists at World Tour level.

Despite globalisation, it can be seen that the sport is still very Eurocentric. France accounts for 55 riders in the World Tour peloton, just ahead of Italy with 54 and Belgium with 53. A country which is struggling due to sponsorship problems is Spain with 35 riders.

Numerous countries have just one rider at WT level, including Brazil, South Africa, China and Ethiopia.
