German rider Max Walscheid made amends for his premature celebration on the opening stage of the Tour of Hainan by winning today’s third stage from Haikou to Chengmai.

The Team Giant-Alpecin rider outsprinted Andrea Pasqualon (Team Roth) and Tino Thömel (RTS – Monton Racing) for the win at the end of the 208-kilometre stage.

However, as Walscheid was celebrating his victory after crossing the line pointing to his sponsor’s name on his jersey, another rider ploughed into him.

Matej Mohoric hit Walscheid’s back wheel before somersaulting over his handlebars onto the ground. Mohoric appeared to be relatively unhurt though and was soon back up on his bike.

Walscheid initially rode off back towards the finish line before turning around to check that Mohoric was OK.
