The Tour of Hainan (2.HC) is taking place at the moment and the opening stage of the race at Xinglong was settled by a bunch sprint.

Unfortunately for German rider Max Walscheid, he thought he had the win in the bag and threw his arms up in celebration.

However, in the closing metres, 23 year-old Walscheid who rides for Team Giant-Alpecin was passed by Brazilian rider Rafael Andriato (Wilier – Southeast) who took the win instead.

Directeur Sportif Arthur van Dongen expalined afterwards: “After good teamwork getting Max to the front for the sprint, he was in a winning position but celebrated too early and finished second. It’s a missed chance but there will be more opportunities in the coming days.”
