Yesterday’s third stage of the Tour of Algarve consisted of an 18-kilometre individual time-trial at Sagres. Going into the stage, Luis Leon Sanchez led the race overall, 5″ ahead of Geraint Thomas (Team Sky).

Unfortunately for the Spanish rider, he crashed on a particularly rough section of the course where roadworks were taking place. He was unable to continue and forced to abandon.

Despite being taken to hospital with a neck brace, it seems that Sanchez has escaped relatively unscathed with just a cut to his chin.

Fabian Cancellara (Trek – Segafredo) won the stage ahead of Tony Martin (Etixx-Quick Step) with Geraint Thomas in third which resulted in the Briton taking over the race lead.
