Etixx-Quick Step have confirmed that Yves Lampaert will not start the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix due to an injury of his right Achilles tendon.

Their team manager, Patrick Lefevere, revealed last week that the reason for his injury was rather unconventional as it occurred when the Belgian rider was hit by a supermarket trolley.

Lampaert’s girlfriend accidentally ran the trolley into his heel when the pair were out shopping last week.

The Belgian rider had a very impressive first season at World Tour level last season, finishing 7th in Paris-Roubaix and winning the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen overall.

Having missed out on racing last week, the 24 year-old had hoped to have recovered in time to be able to start the two monuments but unfortunately will have to skip them.

“I am sad, because the Classics were the top moment of the season for me,” revealed Lampaert. “I could say that I was very unlucky this year, first crashing in Volta ao Algarve, and now this.”

“It’s not nice to watch these races on TV, especially when you are a Belgian rider, but I want to turn the page as soon as possible and keep my focus for my next goals, because the season is still long”, said Lampaert, who will stay off the bike for two weeks, before resuming training.
