This was the moment when Mads Pedersen, a Danish rider for the German squad Team Stölting, was nearly hit by a car overtaking the lead group on the first stage of the Three Days of De Panne.

It happened with less than 46 kilometres to race. The car came within inches of hitting the rider who was close enough to be in a position to tap the car to show his annoyance.

The incident takes place just days after Belgian rider Antoine Demoitié was hit by a race motorbike at Gent-Wevelgem and subsequently died of his injuries. Today’s near-miss further highlights the dangers that riders face.

Afterwards, Team Sky’s Luke Rowe tweeted the following message in relation to the incident: “You can see the number plate, you know who is driving the car. My question is – what are you gonna do @UCI_cycling ?”
