On October 14 there was an accident between a cyclist, Kyle Regier, 19, from Edmond and an Oklahoma State University transit bus on the campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The collision occurred as Regier turned in front of the bus as the bus attempted to pass him. Both the bus and the student were traveling southbound on Monroe Street when the bicycle began to turn left into the parking lot north of the Henry-Bellmon Research Center as the bus attempted to pass Regier on the left, according to the police incident report.

The Oklahoma State University Police Department report concluded that the failure of the bicyclist to signal and the bus’s insufficient clearance resulted in the accident, which left the bicyclist with only a minor head injury.

Regier was taken to Stillwater Medical Center and treated for his injuries after the incident. He was treated and released from Stillwater Medical Center Wednesday and when asked about the accident he said “I don’t remember anything from Wednesday until waking up in Stillwater Medical Center,”

  1. First, they should not call it an accident. It’s a crash. From the video is sure looks like it is completely the cyclists fault. He turned straight into the bus without looking.

    • Not necessarily. Wind noise is a factor when riding outside of the shelter of an enclosed space, plus wide touring tires typical of buses don’t exactly provide for a lot of road noise. Buses are also rear-engine, so you don’t generally hear that until after the bus is past you.
