A cyclist in London who filmed himself being knocked over by a taxi driver has confirmed that the driver has since been fined £700 and received six points on his licence after deliberately knocking the cyclist over with his wing mirror.

The footage shows the taxi driver approaching the cyclist from behind sounding his horn. He then passes close by the cyclist twice. During the second overtaking manoeuvre he slams on the brakes and closes in on the cyclist, knocking him to the ground.

The video of the incident which took place a year ago was uploaded to YouTube by a user named Son of the Winds. On the video, he states:

“I waited 3 months after the attempted assault [for] a decision to prosecute. it was decided that it would be best for the driver to undergo [a] Driver Safety course offered by the police.

“The taxi driver refused to attend. The police called to advise they will now press charges of driving without due care. A hearing followed where the driver pleaded not guilty. 9 months later I attended court for trial as a witness. The driver foolishly defended himself – and the verdict? – Guilty.

“The taxi driver was found guilty of driving without due care. He received 6 points on his licence and £700 in fines and court costs.”

  1. the taxi driver quite clearly knocked him off on purpose, it was not an accident in any way at all, so why has he kept his licence and why only a £700 fine, he should have gone to Prison for attempted murder as the rider could have very easliy gone under the wheels of the taxi, i hope the rider sues him now there has been a guilty verdict because you can bet your life if he would have scratched his taxi on purpose the taxi driver would have sued for damages, loss of earnings, stress and lets not forget some whip lash!!!!!!

  2. That is dangerous driving or GBH. Should have been an instant ban for the taxi driver, possibly a prison sentence. CPS soft as usual.

  3. Because us cyclists are 3rd class citizens and the judges that make decisions don’t spend time on bikes. I reported a van driver trying to knick me off in Hilton village, the police checked and, as the van was registered to a member of the travelling community, they wouldn’t do anything.

  4. I am a cyclist and I’ve watched this video twice now. I would normally side against the driver, but this peddler is a complete plum. Firstly, I think he was looking to get knocked down at the hope of a quick buck. Secondly, if you can’t stay upright in that little brush then you shouldn’t be riding a bike in the road anyway. Idiots like this only contribute to giving cyclists in general a bad name.

    • “Firstly, I think he was looking to get knocked down at the hope of a quick buck.”

What you think happened is not relevant. What actually happened is. Since you have no idea of his intentions, what you think does not matter.

“Secondly, if you can’t stay upright in that little brush then you shouldn’t be riding a bike in the road anyway.”

An unexpected shove to the side into parked cars will knock most riders down, even the highly skilled.

” Idiots like this only contribute to giving cyclists in general a bad name.”

Because of what you think and because he fell after getting knocked to the side, that makes him an idiot and somehow gives us a bad name?

You said you would normally side with the cyclist and called him a plum, then followed by saying he gives us a bad name, but did not make a single point to support those claims. You only stated what you think and used the example of him falling after getting knocked. I fail to see the connection of your two supporting points with your main premise.

    • Nope. I used to be a professional cyclist and that crash is entirely staged. The wally is riding round with cameras sticking out all over the place making a nuisance of himself pumping a giant horn every time a car goes past him, crashing into people and throwing himself on the floor to make some sort of statement or protest. It’s a joke that the cabbie got fined for this. I’m saying this as a cyclist who has never even sat a driving test. I’m a big advocate of cycling, just not such a big advocate of plonkers.

  5. Looks like assault with a deadly weapon to me. Also wreckless endangerment?! I know what i would have done in this case and it woulda cost Mr taxi more than 700 quid.

  6. I don’t get it.

What had the cyclist done to upset the Taxi driver so badly?
Was there something that happened earlier on?

Not that it matters of course this was deliberate assault and not driving without due care and the driver should have got a much stiffer sentence than that.

  7. You guys have some interesting point system. Here in California, 4 points is an automatic loss of license for a year, 6 points for two years, and 9 points for 1.5 years. That would be a 1 or 2 point penalty. The severity of the violation determines how long the points stay on your record.
