Yesterday’s fifth stage of the Vuelta a España was marred by a number of crashes including one towards the end which forced Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk out of the race. The LottoNL-Jumbo rider hit a metal pole in the closing kilometres of the race breaking his collarbone.

Gianni Meersman (Etixx – Quick Step) at the end of the stage in Lugo to take his second stage win of the race and strengthens his grip on the points jersey. Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing Team) maintained the overall lead.

Today’s 163.2-kilometre stage takes the riders from Monforte de Lemos to Luintra. Ribera Sacra.

The onboard highlights from yesterday’s stage shows the aftermate of the big crash with riders having to pick their way around the crash as mechanics rush to the aid of the fallen riders.
