Former professional cyclist George Hincapie has posted details of an incident whereby a motorist pulled a gun on him after trying to run him off the road as Hincapie and his 8 year-old son Enzo were out on a bike ride.

Hincapie, who lives in South Carolina, posted details of the incident on Facebook and also included a photo of the vehicle the motorist was driving.

He said: “Feel like I need to share this with our cycling community. This person tried running me off the road on Paris mt, stopped then pulled a gun out on me after he tried to punch me.”

“I was with my 8 year old son as well. He probably lives on the mountain. Please be aware of this vehicle. Brown Subaru suv. Be careful out there!!”

  1. Poor 8 year old kid… I hope this fucking cunt goes to jail. It’s a sad world when someone can’t even share the road with a bike user because he or she can’t wait a few seconds..

  2. That’s why you would never catch me living in the USA, too many guns mate! Half the population thinks they are Dirty Harry! Sad state of affairs in that country re guns … don’t think it will ever change! Gun ho Septics!

    • Mate! You are full of bollocks. I live in the sates and where guns ownership is the highest (I own 0 by the way and would shoot my own self) crime is generally lowest. I like knowing 1/3 of my jiffy store buddies are packing.. So really STFU. We have some cities with “gun free zones” where people are routinely massacred… So again mate with all due respect pipe down.

      • Obama also releases money to Iran and does whatever he can to piss off our best ally in the Middle East, Israel. He is a dolt.

    • Maybe you should go have a look for yourself first John. I lived there for 8 years, never had a problem, none of my mates had guns, we all rode and yes guns are around the place but it’s still unlikely you’ll be shot or have one pulled on you just for riding your bike!

    • Jonathan Paul Page according to you mate. It’s my opinion (and many others I’m sure agree). You don’t have to agree with me. I recommend you watch “Under the Gun” and educate yourself

    • Good john gargan, stay “down” there in your gun free country, we like people in our country to have balls….

    • The USA is gun nut central. 30,000 shot dead each and every year.

Highest level of gun ownership in the entire world at 100%+ saturation. The next highest? Yemen, at 47%. YEMEN.

There are 8 MILLION AR -15S in the hands of civilians alone.

They just keep shooting one another.

But they’ll tell you “Guns keep you safe! Good guys with guns!”

      They’re f*cking delusional.

      With guns.

      • 30,000 shot dead every year?!?!?! There were a little over 11,000 homicides in the US in 2016. At least ducking wiki that shit before you start spreading bullshit everywhere.

    • Those of you bashing the US gun policy ever been here, or just spouting off stats you read online? Don’t ride around Chicago (or any inner city really) and you’ll be fine. In 33 years I’ve never had an issue with a gun, and I was raised in the South.

      • Robert Rj Rankin – “The Land of the Free” just don’t go to the inner city [of any city in the United States] & you’ll be fine… soon becomes “just don’t go to the dangerous neighborhoods”, then to “just don’t go out at all, home is safety”. F that! Take the power back

      • I and many others “ride around Chicago” all the time and never get into any untoward incidents. Lakefront, Halsted, Milwaukee, Cermak, you name it. Lately though distracted commercial drivers have begun killing off some of us 🙁

      • Born and raised in Chicago and have ridden and raced road for 20+ years. Never had a hint of trouble riding around Chicago at any time, but I also don’t go far enough to the south or west side that it would matter. Chicago is a big city. Most of you don’t know what you’re talking about.

    • Robert Rj Rankin hold on! So you say “…Don’t ride around Chicago (or any inner city really) and you’ll be fine…” that quote there says it all mate! Sad state of affairs if you can’t ride your bike is certain areas! Not the case in Australia mate! You guys need to ditch the guns ASAP, end of.

    • The vast majority of crime comes from inner cities here. Not going to sugar coat anything. Keep your negativity over there, we’re better off without you. Also don’t believe everything you read online twit.

    • Well done Robert. You’ve even adopted the American penchant for using midcle initials, along with the “guns good build wall illegals out” diatribe.

The USA suffers more gun deaths caused by TODDLERS than the UK does in ten YEARS.

As an ex soldier, I’ll say it loud:

Firearms belong in the hands of highly trained professionals, not every yokel, hillbilly, gang banger, or Rambo wannabe.

And so you die. On an industrial scale.

      Fucking savages.

      • Tell you what the day you can demonstrate to me there will never be a bad guy with a gun, I’ll give up mine. Until then, keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

      • I’m just glad you’re EX military. You would doubtless be the one to ignore the Constitution, which you were sworn to uphold and defend, and gleefully follow the order to fire on American civilians. Thanks for demonstrating the reason the 2nd amendment exists to begin with.

    • Look guys….. this story has nothing, absolutely not one single thing to do with the effing gun, so shut up about the gun because that is a very minor part of the bigger story.

The weapon we are FAR MORE scared of here in South Carolina that they wield is their cars.

The problem is that here in our state (yes, I live AND cycle in South Carolina) the relationship between cyclists and drivers has become highly antagonistic. Drivers here truly do not think that we belong on the road, they think the roads and theirs and theirs alone.

Part of the problem is that we have a bunch of cyclists out there that don’t obey the laws of the road and they routinely piss off drivers by jumping lights, running stop signs and etc. Does that give them a pass to menace us with their 3 thousand pound metal battering rams? Hell no. But they’re doing it anyway and they feel justified in doing so because so many cyclists are refusing to abide by the same rules that they have to. The other part of this problem that is going unanswered in the harassment, injury and murder of cyclists is the accountability for what drivers are doing to us.

A very good friend of ours was murdered by a drunk driver while riding his bike home on Hilton Head Island last month. The guy who killed him… was picked up on another DUI 2 days ago while out on bail. Is he going to be held accountable? Who knows…. eventually. But we already have people here saying that he isn’t responsible for the death of Dr. Garske because he has the “disease” of alcoholism. Defining the result of someones poor decision to drive drunk as a symptom of a disease sounds like an excuse to yet again not hold a driver responsible for menacing/maiming/killing a cyclist.

So like I said, shut up about the gun…. the gun isn’t the problem…

If you’re going to be on here raising a stink bitch about how these bastards go free with the slap on the wrist doing shit like this, even when they’re caught on video.

    • Don’t believe the hyperbole, USA is a wonderful place to live. most people are kind or at least polite.

    • Understand your point, but you are so far off base. Gun, bat, tire iron, knife – who cares what the driver threatened George and his son with – the problem is total disregard for others, narcissism, impatience, selfishness, lack of empathy and lack of morality. There is not a weapon in the world that causes crime and confrontation – THAT requires a mind, and too many minds are focused on anger.

    • That’s why you would never catch me living in Europe: honest citizens can’t carry a gun! Aside from the police, there’s no one in Europe but predators and defenseless sheep. That’s why mass murders occur in “gun-free zones” in America and everywhere in Europe. At least when the predator strikes in America, in most places the intended victims have a chance to defend themselves — and they do.

    • The reason the USA has the 2nd Amendment and the freedom to own a firearm is because of British and European authoritarianism! We were trying to extricate this country from the slavery and servitude cultures of Europe. How can you forget this? We’ve done pretty well I will say.

    • Sir, IMHO I think you are sadly mistaken. Lawful registered gun owners don’t do the things like this person did.
A legal gun owner has to attend school and shooting range and demonstrate safe practices and pay hefty fees for the privilege of exercising our constitutional right to carry a firearm. Now that being said I suspect the individual that did the for-mentioned crime isn’t a respectable gun owner.
I hope the person that did this crime is brought to justice.

  3. I’ve looked all over for this including George’s FB page can’t find it. Also the screen shot of his page doesn’t have one of those blue checks next to his name while his FB page does have one. Any more evidence?

  4. Is it just me or does anyone else happen to notice that this really shouldn’t be a gun debate? It’s about idiots on the road who refuse to share with bicyclists. He tried to run them down first with his vehicle which makes just as good a weapon as a gun and is far easier to get. I am very happy that both riders are ok and wouldn’t it be wonderful if the offender was caught before he kills someone?

  5. Last I checked brandishing a firearm is still a crime even in F’ed up SC. They have the license plate and two eye witnesses so why are they not arresting this A-hole?

  6. Has anyone confirmed this? It looks like a hoax. Its not mentioned on Hincapies facebook site, and the avatar in the screenshot is wrong.

  7. Almost certainly a hoax, go check Facebook, that account has only one other post on it and this post has been deleted, the real GH page and his official website have no mention of it, a photo of the gunman shown on some new pages is from a June event in NY. If it looks lime a Hoax, sounds like a Hoax and smells like a hoax…….. Oh an great investigative journalism BCF, took me five minutes to uncover the truth.

  8. Holy Schitt! R U C’ rious?

That’s insane. I used to ride with a police officer who always rode with a gun, but he said he had to leave it home because idiot cage dwellers (car drivers) almost pushed him to use it once.

I guess fat lazy people get upset when they see fit athlete types. The bodies we cyclists can and often have CANNOT BE BOUGHT, it is EARNED…
    always!

    Stay safe guys n dolls.
    Much Love and Light,

  10. There is enough evidence here to make a case for harassment under SC bike law, as well as
pointing a firearm at someone. Hope George reported it. Good picture of the car and license plate.

  11. Pulling a gun on someone when the threat of lethal force is not justified is aggravated assault, a felony, just about everywhere in the States. If he goes to the police with this the offender would be arrested.

  12. A motorist pulled a gun on him whilst cycling… Was it a motorized cycle, or is that a misplaced modifier? I mourn for journalism.

  13. got the license number. no reason he is not in jail right now.

I’ve been chased down paris mtn by a dumbass in a car also. no reason except the 10 seconds extra it would have taken him to stay back or pass when safe.

  14. Hello. I live in South Carolina. I just chatted with George Hincapie’s son and his friends while they were visitiing the library where I work a few weeks ago. I live in Travelers Rest, SC which is close to Paris Mountain, where the incident occurred. So I live in the “states,” in the actual region where the incident occurred, so I feel qualified to speak on this particular issue.
Cyclists have been targeted on roads here before. The Travelers Rest area has a lot of residents who like to fly the Confederate flag in the back of their trucks. I hear gunshots almost every weekend, and not because I live in the inner city, but because there is a lot of target shooting just for fun. This is an incident of road rage against a cyclist, but the fact is that rather just giving the finger, this person was able to threaten with a gun because of the availability and easy access to guns. That pretty much wraps it up. Thanks for reading. Oh, PS. I’ve been to Chicago and had a perfectly marvelous time. I grew up in Harlem (might be considered inner city) in New York City and am alive to write this post. Don’t let stereotypes fool you.

  15. It’s a 2008 Subaru tribeca limited suv 3.6l
We can come together form a group to fight this type of event and have one account to search reports of unconscionable vehicle/driver actions.
I can get owner of vehicle name, address, criminal background, email … So can we all search a real .gov sanctioned search site on license plate lookups.

Let’s make a statement we fight back the best we are able
