Irish rider Sam Bennett has responded to Cycle Sport magazine’s claim on him being British following his win in Critérium International today. The British magazine tweeted the following message earlier today:
“Sky’s two wins yesterday, @Sammmy_Be today. Easy to say British teams/riders are on fire. Suspect Dutch, Polish and Irish fans would object!”
Bennett responded shortly afterwards with the following message in Gaelic: “Gabh mo leithsceil @cyclesportmag ach is eireannach mise. Go raibh maith agaibh go leir don tachaíocht agus do fhocail cineálta”
His response more or less translates as: “Excuse me @cyclesportmag but I’m Irish. Thank you very much for your support and your kind words.”
It follows on from a claim by the Belgian press last year on the rider as being half-Belgian following his wins in Bayern Rundfahrt.
