The young Belgian rider who suffered a heart attack during yesterday’s opening stage of Critérium International has been placed in an artificial coma according to an update from Daniel Verbrackel, General Manager of his Roubaix Lille Métropole team this morning.

22 year-old Daan Myngheer was transported by helicopter to a specialist cardiac unit in Ajaccio, Corsica after having the heart attack. It happened with about 25 kilometres of the stage remaining when he lost contact with the peloton.

The race’s medical team were quickly in attendance and after suffering the heart attack, a helicopter was summoned. On arrival at the hospital, he was placed on a life support machine.

After consultation with the race organisers including Christian Prudhomme, the team have decided to start the final stage.

Myngheer’s family arrived in Corsica this morning where they were met by Jean-Charles Canonne, the President of Velo Club Roubaix who will provide support to the family.
