The opening stage of the Tour Down Under saw the riders cycle 132 kilometres from the Barossa town of Tanunda and travel through well-known South Australian vineyards.

They would tackle Checker Hill before a speedy descent towards the finish line in Campbelltown where it was expected to finish in a bunch sprint.
