Cadel Evans (BMC), Simon Gerrans (Orica-Green Edge) and Richie Porte (Team Sky) were amongst those expected to do well.
Going into the stage, Jack Bobridge (UniSA-Australia) was still holding the leader’s jersey, with Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar), Lieuwe Westra (Astana Pro Team) and Daryl Impey (Orica GreenEdge) lurking just behind.
