Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) showed that he is getting back to form after a difficult winter by going on the attack on the opening stage of Volta a Catalunya today.

The stage took the riders on a 175-kilometre loop starting and finishing in Calella and involved five categorised climbs.

The bunch were still together going over the final categorised climb of Alt de Collsacreu and inside the final ten kilometres, Bjorn Thurau (Wanty Groupe Gobert) went on the attack.

The German was brought back with five kilometres and Roche then counterattacked on the final drag.

This video shows the final twenty kilometres of the stage.
