There was more tragic news for the world of cycling this evening when the death of Daan Myngheer was announced by his Roubaix-Lille Metropole team.

The 22 year-old Belgian had suffered a heart attack during Saturday morning’s road stage of Criterium International. He was transferred to a specialist cardiac unit in Ajaccio, Corsica where he was put on a life support machine.

The team announced the news on their Facebook page this evening. Their statement read as follows:

“With regret in our hearts we have to tell you that Daan has lost his last race. He has fought like a true champion but has lost the battle. He died on Monday 28 March in the hospital of Ajaccio in Corsica around 19hr 08 in the presence of his parents, his sister Fleur and his companion Emely. Daan is to donate his organs so that other lives might be saved. All our thoughts go out to his parents, sister, friend and close family. Rest in peace champion. Daantje forever”

The news of his passing follows on from the tragic announcement this weekend of the death of Antoine Demoitié of Wanty Groupe Gobert who died from injuries sustained in Gent-Wevelgem.
