Tony Martin (Etixx-Quick Step) has pulled out of the Tour de France today on the final stage of the race from Chantilly to the Champs-Elysées.

The German rider pulled out of the race after the first passage of the finish line on the Champs-Elysées with a little over 60 kilometres left of racing.

Martin had been suffering from knee pain according to his team. By withdrawing today, he’s become the first rider since Lieuwe Westra in 2013 to pull out of the Tour on the final day.

It’s the third time that Martin has had to pull out of the Tour. He abandoned in 2012 after suffering a scaphoid fracture and last year, he crashed in the final kilometre of stage 6 while he was wearing the yellow jersey and had to abandon because of a broken collarbone

Despite his withdrawal though, this year is still a record for the least number of riders to abandon the race with just 24 riders pulling out.
