Previous race leader Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) has pulled out of the Giro d’Italia on today’s 227-kilometre 11th stage from Modena to Asolo.

The Dutchman had been sitting in 29th position, 11’42” behind race leader Bob Jungels (Etixx-Quick Step) going into the stage.

Dumoulin’s team have since confirmed that he was struggling because of saddle sores as they tweeted: “Unfortunately @tom_dumoulin has been forced to abandon the @giroditalia due to saddle sores. More details to follow.”

Dumoulin had won the opening stage of the race in Apeldoorn to earn the first pink jersey of the race, before Marcel Kittel moved into first on GC for one stage. Dumoulin took over the leadership of the race again after the fourth stage to Praia a Mare where he finished second.

The Dutch rider had been scheduled to take part in the Tour of Poland in July rather than the Tour de France, but it’s unknown at this stage whether his withdrawal from the Giro will affect his race programme.
