Thomas Pidcock today showed once again why he’s one of the most exciting young talents in the sport, when he won the Junior Men’s Time Trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen.
Pidcock finished the 21.1-kilometre test in a time of 28’02”, which was 12″ faster than Italy’s Antonio Puppio with Filip Maciejuk of Poland another one second behind.
It’s another remarkable result for the versatile 18 year-old from Yorkshire. Earlier this year, he won both the UCI World Junior Cyclo-cross Championships and the UEC European Junior Cyclo-cross Championships.
On the road, Pidcock has also taken numerous big wins including Paris-Roubaix Juniors, a stage and overall at the Grand Prix Rüebliland and a round of the Tour Series in the UK.
Afterwards, Pidcock outlined that his main focus will still be cyclo-cross as he said: “The win doesn’t change my ambition for cyclo cross. Cyclo is the main target for this season, at least. And the road will be supplementary to that, I guess.”
Next up for the Briton is the Junior Men’s Road Race on Saturday and he said: “It means that more people are probably going to be looking at me than they probably are.”
He also admitted that he liked the comparison to another rider who has excelled in a number of disciplines – Peter Sagan.
“It feels pretty good [to be compared to Peter Sagan],” he said. “He wins bike races, but then also has fun doing it. It’s what I like to do.”
