Ben Hermans (BMC Racing) won today’s queen stage of the Tour of Oman (2.HC) to Green Mountain but there was a moment of chaos on the road when there was a mass crash in the bunch.

The crash happened as the riders negotiated a stream which ran across the road. Amongst those to come down in the crash were Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) and the Team Sunweb pair of Roy Curvers and Mike Teunissen.

There were no serious injuries reported, but it did slow things up for a while allowing the lead group on the road to extend their lead.

However, the leaders were eventually caught and on the summit finish to Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain), race leader Hermans proved strongest.

The Belgian won by 3″ from Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) with Rui Costa (UAE Abu Dhabi) a further 8″ down. Hermans now leads by 22″ from Costa with Aru at 35″. The race finishes tomorrow with a 130.5-kilometre stage from The Wave to Muttrah Corniche.
