Kirsten Wild (Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling) won the second stage of the Giro d’Italia Femminile, the Giro Rosa in Ovada yesterday.

The Dutch rider won in a sprint finish ahead of Giorgia Bronzini (Cylance Pro Cycling) and European Champion Marianne Vos (Waowdeals Pro Cycling) at the end of the 120km stage.

The main breakaway of the day consisted of Sheyla Gutierrez (Cylance Pro Cycling) and Alice Maria Arzuffi (Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias) and the pair were still still almost three minutes clear with just 20 kilometres to go before Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s riders came to the front. The pair were only caught inside the final kilometre.

Emilia Fahlin and Elisa Longo Borghini led Wild into an optimum position where she was able to take the win on the uphill finish ahead of Bronzini and Vos. The win has also earned the Dutchwoman enough points to take the lead in the Cyclamen Jersey classification, which she will wear on stage three.

Lucinda Brand (Team Sunweb) has now taken over the maglia rosa from her team-mate Ellen van Dijk after their team had won the opening day’s team time trial.
