A motorist in California has apologised after a video was posted on Facebook on Wednesday of him threatening a cyclist. Robert Lewis admitted that he was embarrassed by his behaviour

The video that was posted shows the enraged motorist threatening the cyclist and using numerous homophobic slurs.

The driver goes into full drill sergeant mode as he tells the cyclist that “I’m your Huckleberry” and amongst the threats he uses is to “pull Trump” on the cyclist.

The confrontation arose over the use of a share lane which is used by cyclists, and the cyclist was apparently clipped by the wing mirror of the passing car.

WARNING: The video contains some very strong language.

Mark Friis posted the video with the following message:

“For those of you who think cycling can be a bit scary, let me introduce some of the sick fuckers out there. This just happened to a friend of mine in Corona del Mar. I will not give his name as he is worried about retribution from some of this assholes buddies. The cops will do nothing about it which is sad that someone can say “you’re a dead man” and get away with it.

And I thought surfers were easy going.

Do not make matters worse folks. It’s fine to make wise ass remarks but no threats or contacting the business. Let the police take this now. We made a great stand but take the high road.”

The cyclist was entitled to use the lane with motorists only allowed to use the lane when no cyclists are present.

Lewis said that he had no idea that this was the law. “I’m very embarrassed,” said Lewis. “I screwed up.”

“I’m just an old surfer, knucklehead, and I do apologize for using the words that I used,” the 66 year-old told CBS2 reported Michelle Gile.

Police are now investigating the incident.

  1. Everyone can make a mistake and some can be extremely costly. Some people realise immediately and others take a big shock (like seeing themselves on video) to realise. I don’t think a week has gone by on my cycle commute when someone hasn’t endangered my life. Many don’t care, but the decent people do. This guy found the real man inside himself and has realised his error and has the guts to admit it. As a cyclist I thank him and hope he can continue in this vein, sharing the experience with one or two of his buddies.

  2. it doesn’t take much courage to threaten someone half you size. he’s likely apologizing because FINALLY this got the attention of the local prosecutor. in my mind he clearly committed assault and then threatened the bicyclist with death. far out……. in a concealed carry state, he’d have been shot.
