The Breton stage race Kreiz Breizh Elites (UCI 2.2) continued yesterday with stages in both the morning and afternoon.

Stage 2 of the race was 82 kilometres from Ploërdut to Callac. It finished in a bunch sprint which was won by Valentin Madouas (Brest Iroise Cyclisme 2000) ahead of Axel Journiaux (Vendee U) and Alan Riou (Team Cycliste Pays de Dinan).

Five of the six members of the Irish team finished in the bunch, with Mark Downey towards the front in 18th position.

Jeroen Meijers (Rabobank Development Team) took over the leader’s white jersey from Guillaumee Gaboraud (Occitance Cyclisme Formation).

In the afternoon, the riders faced ten laps of a 10-kilometre circuit based around Carhaix-Plouguer.

Peter Schulting (Parkhotel Valkenburg) finished 53″ clear of a chasing group to win the stage alone. Cyrille Patoux (VC Pays de Loudeac) won the bunch sprint to take second ahead of Melvin Rulliere (VC Rouen 76).

Matthew Teggart was best of the Irish, finishing in 23rd place, in the same group as Patoux and Rulliere. Mark Downey and Sean McKenna also finished in the same time.

Meijers hung on to white going into today’s final 163-kilometre stage from Plouguernevel to Rostrenen but will have to vigilant as there are six other riders within ten seconds. Matthew Teggart is best of the Irish team, sitting in 15th place overall, 40″ behind Meijers.
