Dan Martin (Quick Step Floors) had an attacking ride on today’s thirteenth stage of the Tour de France from Saint-Girons to Foix, and despite slipping one place on GC to sixth, gained time on many of the other GC contenders.
Martin attacked towards the bottom of the final descent of the Mur de Peguere as the GC contenders raced to the finish in Foix and gained nine seconds on race leader Fabio Aru (Astana), Chris Froome (Team Sky), Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling Team) and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale). His deficit to Aru has now been reduced to 1’32”.
What’s more remarkable is that Martin is struggling with injuries sustained in his high-speed crash with Richie Porte (BMC Racing) on Sunday’s ninth stage to Chambéry.
The Irish rider has said that he has been struggling to get out of the saddle such is the pain he is in and the below footage from the Dutch TV channel NOS of Martin getting off his bike after the stage helps to show the extent of the pain that he is currently suffering.
