Earlier this year, Democratic politician and the current United States Secretary of State John Kerry, broke his right leg in a cycling accident in Scionzier, France.

The 71 year-old was subsequently flown to Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital to be operated on, and it seems that US presidential candidate Donald Trump has a real problem with a septuagenarian cycling his bike.

Newsy Politics have produced the below video comprised of clips where Trump takes multiple swipes at Kerry for cycling.

Trump is shown repeatedly making statements like: “He goes into a bicycle race at 73, 74 years old. He falls, breaks his leg. I don’t want him on a bicycle during nuclear negotiations.”

At another rally he stated, “I will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. And we won’t be using a man like Secretary Kerry that has absolutely no concept of negotiation, who’s making a horrible and laughable deal, who’s just being tapped along as they make weapons right now, and then goes into a bicycle race at 72 years old, and falls and breaks his leg. I won’t be doing that. And I promise I will never be in a bicycle race. That I can tell you.”

Kerry wasn’t actually racing when he crashed, but Trump doesn’t let the truth get in the way of his rant.

Kerry is indeed an experienced cyclist who had been descending the Col de la Colombière when he crashed. Cannondale-Garmin’s Jonathan Vaughters has spoken highly of his ability on the bike.

“A lot of times, you go on rides with executives or dignitaries or VIPs and it’s a very, very casually paced ride,” Vaughters told The Wall Street Journal. “But Kerry is the real deal—fit, fast, confident. If he raced in his age category, he’d be one of the top riders in the U.S.”

Trump may have an issue with people partaking in cycling, or another possibility is that he’s just appealing to the mindsets of the types of voters who he is looking to win over.
