The eleventh stage of the Giro d’Italia finished at the motor racing track at Imola (Autodromo Ferrari), where the San Marino Grand Prix takes place.

Twenty one years ago, tragedy struck at the Grand Prix. During qualifying on the Saturday, the Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger crashed head-on into a wall at over 310 km/h at the Villeneuve corner after his Simtek lost the front wing. He died instantly from a skull fracture.

There was another tragedy the following day, when the three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna lost control of his car and crashed into the concrete wall at the Tamburello corner on Lap 7. He succumbed shortly after impact as a piece of the car had pierced his helmet and skull.

In memory of his compatriot, Murilo Antonio Fischer decided to mark the Giro arriving at the circuit and the death of Senna.

Fischer rides with the FDJ team, and had a special helmet made for the stage with the same colour scheme as Senna’s famous racing helmet. Nice tribute!
