Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson has posted photos on his Facebook page showing him loading up his car with some of his prized possessions as he evacuates his property due to the threat of an approaching bush fire.

The Great Ocean Road bushfire in Victoria started on December 19 and has so far destroyed over 100 homes. At least 445 people are now fighting the fires, using six aircraft and 21 bulldozers.

Anderson has now decided that it’s time that he leaves his property, loading as many valuable possessions as he can before he departs. He posted the following message.

Anderson became the first non-European to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey in 1981, and the following year he would wear it for another nine days. A framed yellow jersey is one of the items which he’s taking with him.

Amongst other highlights in an illustrious career were wins in Amstel Gold Race, Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, the Tour of Switzerland and Paris–Tours.

Anderson is also saving a number of team bikes which he has kept from his time racing professionally including an Eddy Merckx from his stint with Panasonic.
