It has been announced that the first official European Championship beach race will take place next month at Scheveningen, near The Hague.

The European Championship Beachrace will take place on 18 December and is being organised by the Dutch Cycling Federation (KNWU), the European Cycling Union (UEC) and event organising company Exventure.

Competition is open for cyclists with a competition license, but also for recreational riders. The distance is 54 kilometres on two laps on the beach between The Hague and the village of Katwijk.

For recreational riders it’s also possible to do 1 lap of 27 kilometres and for recreational riders a license is not required.

This kind of cycling is becoming increasingly popular and a number of manufacturers have designed special bikes for this type of race, the so cold Beachracers. The bikes feature a specific geometry, fat tyres and specific gear ratios for racing on sand. Some countries already have their official national championships.
