The British government has said that it is supporting a bid to bring the UCI Road World Championships back to the UK for the first time since 1982 in Goodwood. The proposed venue would mostly likely be in the North of England.

In the Comprehensive Spending Review, announced yesterday by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, the government said it was committed to bringing more top level sporting events to the UK, with the UCI Road World Championships identified as one of two events where it said it would support bids.

The statement read: “Following the success of hosting London 2012 and the Rugby Union World Cup the government will support the ambition to host the cycling Road World Championships and 2021 Rugby League World Cup.”

The UCI World Road Race Championships were previously held in Leicester in 1970 and Goodwood in 1982. Next year’s World Championships are set to take place in Doha, Qatar in October with the 2017 championships taking place in Bergen, Norway and 2018 in Innsbruck, Austria.
