Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac) took the lead in the Tour de France King of the Mountains classification yesterday after taking stage two’s only two available mountain points. In doing so, he pulled on the first red-and-white-spotted jersey of the 104th edition of the Tour in Liége on Sunday.

The American rider gave an interesting interview on Dutch channel RTL Entertainment after the stage where he discussed where and when the idea for chasing the KOM points came about.

“After the time-trial yesterday, I took a shower in my hotel room and I was completely naked in my room and Charly Wegelius who’s our team director came in and he started talking to me,” Phinney said. “But I was completely naked, so I was like ‘what’s up man?’ and he started mentioning this polka dot jersey.”

“I was like ‘yeah, but I’m naked, let me get some clothes on first’. But he planed that seed and then we had the team meeting this morning and that was what they wanted to have happened. I went out there and made that happen.”

The interviewer for Dutch TV then tells Phinney that: “I prefer to see you with this jersey”, to which Phinney responds: “You don’t even know man. You don’t know even know what I look like naked bro.”
