The UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) yesterday announced the successful bids for numerous upcoming UCI World Championships including the 2019 Road World Championships which will be held in Yorkshire.

It will mark the return of the event to Britain after a 37 years absence having last been held at Goodwood in 1982.

“We will use some of the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire routes but it won’t be possible to go to every town, city and village in the region,” said Gary Verity, head of Welcome to Yorkshire. “However, the objective is to visit every part of Yorkshire, north, east, west and south.”

The 2019 World Championships will be the third time that the event has been held in Britain. In addition to the ’82 Worlds in Goodwood, the 1970 Championships were held in Mallory Park in Leicester.

Among the other successful bids announced by the UCI yesterday are Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada), which has been awarded the 2019 UCI Mountain Bike (and Masters Mountain Bike) World Championships and Heusden-Zolder (Belgium) and Houston (USA), which will stage the 2019 and 2020 UCI BMX World Championships respectively. The 2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships will be held in Berlin (Germany).

In addition, the UCI has announced that every two years, the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships will be held at the UCI World Cycling Centre (UCI WCC) Velodrome, situated at the headquarters of the International Federation in Aigle, Switzerland.

The decision was made as part of the UCI’s ongoing strategy to help nurture and grow track cycling for young athletes by ensuring competing nations are fully supported through the state-of-the-art resources and facilities at the UCI’s Home of Cycling.
