Xeno Young was one of the leading animators of the Men’s Scratch Race at the World Junior Track Championships in Aigle on his way to an eventual 15th place finish today.

The County Down rider made two blistering attacks in the 10km race, spending a significant amount of time off the front of the top class field in the 50-lap race at the UCI headquarters in Switzerland.

Young attacked the main field just before half distance to close to a four-rider group up front but the main pack were alive to the danger and they were returned to the fold.

Having regathered his resources the first year junior tried again with 17 laps remaining, chasing over to the lead duo of Joab Schneiter of Switzerland and Luis Garikano of Spain in the company of Italy’s Moreno Marchetti. As cooperation disintegrated among the four leaders, Young attacked again, going solo for a number of laps only to be caught with ten laps to go.

Young’s final effort was the last attack before Batsaikhan Tegshbayar moved clear to take a famous win for Mongolia.

Three Irish riders are in action tomorrow with Shenna McKiverigan riding the Women’s Scratch race, Ciara Doogan in the Women’s Individual Pursuit and Luke Smith in the Men’s Points Race.
