The Cape Town Cycle Tour has announced that it has alternative plans in place, in the event that massive fires raging along the route affect the event this coming Sunday. Mark Cavendish and his teammate Mark Renshaw are amongst those set to take part this year.

The Cycle Tour, which is in its 38th year, is the largest, timed cycling event in the world. 35,000 cyclists are due to take part in the 109km event.

The route includes Chapman’s Peak and Ou Kaapse Weg which are among the roads that are closed at the moment. Organisers say they’re in close contact with the City of Cape Town about how the fire may affect the event this coming Sunday.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust says its standard operating procedure to have alternative route plans available at a moment’s notice. That decision however will only be made on Wednesday after consultation with all the stakeholders.

Organisers have appealed to the hundreds of cyclists out training to avoid the affected areas and allow the officials the space to perform their duties.
