Cycle insurer, ETA Cycle Insurance, this week unveiled what they have described as “the world’s first pedal-powered gritter bicycle.”

The company said that they developed the bicycle because there is no statutory requirement for councils to grit the cycle network. They provided a demonstration of the bicycle in action in London during the week.

A spokesperson for the ETA said: “Bicycles remain the best way to beat congestion whatever the weather so it’s vital that their lanes and paths are gritted when temperatures plummet.”

The gritter bicycle is capable of carrying 50 kilograms of salt with which to treat cycle lanes and pavements this winter.
