The World Champion, Michal Kwiatkowski, was in contention in yesterday’s Milan-San Remo until he crashed out of the race on the descent of the Poggio.

Kwiatkowski (Etixx Quick Step) came down in the crash along with his team mate Zdenek Stybar, Philippe Gilbert (BMC) and Gerald Ciolek (MTN Qhubeka). Victory went to John Degenkolb (Giant Alpecin) ahead of last year’s winner Alexander Kristoff (Katusha). Kwiatkowski did go on to finish the race, albeit 4:56 down in 67th place.

Afterwards, he posted a picture on Twitter with his damaged Specialized Evade helmet, which he says saved his life.

“Let’s hope tomorrow morning when I wake up from bed I won’t feel anything,” Kwiatkowski later said, “but as of now I am feeling OK and I have to be happy about that.”
