It’s not every day you see the World’s No.1 cyclist turning up at your café but that’s what happened today as Alejandro Valverde walked into Café Velo in Cork City.

The Spaniard, who won both Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège this season, was in Cork this weekend to meet up with two of his sons, who have been staying in the city recently.

Valverde’s wife Natalia has been studying in Cork, and two of the couple’s sons also moved to Cork during a school break to help improve their English. The Movistar rider travelled over for the weekend with their other son.

Rob Horgan, the owner of the café on George’s Quay told us about his surprise visitor, as he said, “He’s a really nice guy, posing for photos with everyone. We’re also showing the 2009 Vuelta on the screen here, which he won. He’s off to Kinsale later before flying home tomorrow.”

Cafe Velo

Rob is a keen cyclist himself, and established the cycling-themed café recently. We would fully recommend checking out Café Velo if you’re in the city.
