The classics season kicked off in style today in Belgium with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The 200 kilometre race featured many famous Flemish climbs including the Muur van Geraardsbergen, Kruisberg, Taaienberg, Leberg and Molenberg
The footage below starts with 5 kilometres remaining, as three Etixx Quick Step riders (Tom Boonen, Niki Terpstra and Stijn Vandenberghe) are away with just one other rider, Ian Stannard (Team Sky).
The group had formed with forty kilometres remaining, and despite a chase behind led by the likes of Greg Van Avermaet and Sep Vanmarcke, the quartet were still away going into the last few kilometres.
The race is the only cobbled classic which is missing from Boonen’s palmares, so with their strength in numbers, it really should have been straightforward for Etixx Quick Step, shouldn’t it?
