Vincenzo Nibali has undergone surgery to have a plate removed from his left collarbone, which had been inserted following his crash on a descent during the Rio Olympic Games Road Race in 2016, where the Italian suffered a double fracture of his left collarbone.

The procedure which Dr. Carlo Guardascione Head of the Medical Staff of Team Bahrain Merida described as being successful, was performed at “Papa Giovanni XXIII” Hospital in Bergamo this morning

“Nibali has successfully undergone the surgery carried out by Prof. Claudio Castelli (Director of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology) and by Antonino Cassisi (Responsible of the Department of Maxillofacial surgery) regarding the aesthetic reconstructive part,” said Dr. Guardascione.

“The rider will follow a period of 8-10 days of absolute rest to allow the perfect healing of the surgical wound.”
