Following on from comments made by Matt Brammeier on Twitter, Vincenzo Nibali is said to be considering legal action against the Irish rider.

In recent days, Nibali’s Astana team confirmed that the Italian may now target the Tour de France instead of the Giro d’Italia. The news followed on from the cancellation of a stage of Tirreno-Adriatico last week due to snow.

Nibali’s team coach Paolo Slongo suggested that he may skip the Giro d’Italia and ride the Tour de France due to the introduction of the new UCI Extreme Weather Protocol and the chance that some big mountain stages in the Giro could be cancelled if the weather is poor.

Brammeier then posted a link to the article on Twitter with the message: “Better you stay home & skip the whole season you narrow minded, selfish moron.”

Tony Martin of Etixx-Quick Step then came out in support of Brammeier as he tweeted in response: “Matt, you’re a legend! I couldn’t say it better!”

According to a report on Gazzetta.it, the legal team of the Sicilian rider are considering what steps to take against Brammeier and Martin.

  1. I mean, yes. Nibali can be a total asshole. But the “He would considering skipping the Giro” was just a consideration. And something that said his coach, not Nibali himself. Telling Nibali is a “narrow minded, selfish moron” is giving him an excuse to play it as a victim.

  2. How can you take anything anyone says from a Team that should have been thrown out of cycling last year seriously, Brammier said it as he seen and he was 100% correct. Nibali wasn’t arsed about safety on the day, well done Matt !
