Trek-Segafredo have announced that their Directeur Sportif and former professional, Steven de Jongh, sustained a concussion after crashing during a training ride yesterday near Girona in Spain.
Earlier in the day, Steven’s wife Renée had posted a message on Twitter to ask for help in the search for her husband who went missing around noon. Strava records showed his ride had stopped abruptly in a descent close to La Ganga.
The local police reacted promptly and started a search operation at that precise spot. Others in the vicinity also helped in the search including Dutch rider Robert Gesink.
Later in the afternoon, a helicopter found Steven lying in a ravine, unconscious, but with a pulse and breathing. De Jongh was brought to consciousness by the paramedics and transported to the hospital in Girona, where further examinations showed that he suffers from a severe concussion.
De Jongh has said that “everything hurts right now” but thankfully no broken bones have been revealed. As for now, the conditions of the accident still remain unclear.
