The Transcontinental Race is an annual, self-supported, ultra-distance cycling race across Europe and this year’s race started yesterday in Geraardsbergen, Belgium and will finish in Istanbul.

It’s just the fourth edition of the race but interest in the race has grown rapidly: 30 people started the first edition of the race in 2013; over 1,000 people applied for a place in the fourth edition in 2016 of which 350 were successful.

The route varies for each edition and the distance has varied between 3,200 to 4,200 km, with the winners taking between 7 and 10 days to reach the finish.

Directed and Produced by Barnaby Fox ‘Race to Istanbul’ is a feature length documentary from last year’s race following the highs and lows of the race from the view of the Race Directors.

On the 24th of July 2015, 172 riders arrived in Geraardsbergen and raced to Istanbul. The Transcontinental is a race like no other. Much like the early days of bicycle racing cyclist ride with no team cars or soigneurs to look after them. It is each for their own taking on Europe’s toughest terrain.
