Today’s stage from Mende to Valence is a day off for the GC contenders. Despite four categorised climbs along the route, the stage will most likely end in a bunch sprint.

It’s in the interests of the top sprinters for today to end in a bunch sprint, as it will be the last opportunity for the fast men to win a stage before next Sunday’s final stage to Paris. A breakaway will inevitably go clear early on, but it’s difficult to see the likes of Etixx-Quick Step and Lotto-Soudal letting the break stay clear. These teams will come to the front to ensure that’s it set up for Mark Cavendish and Andre Greipel.

The green jersey competition is turning into one of the most interesting aspects of this year’s Tour, and today will offer an opportunity for Greipel and Cavendish to reduce the gap to Peter Sagan.
