News is emerging from Paris this morning that police have fired shots at a motorist who tried to break through onto the Tour de France route. The man drove toward officers at speed on the Place de la Concorde, as they prepared for the arrival of the Tour.

Luc Poignant, of the SGP police union, told the BFM television network that no officers were injured. He also said the car escaped with its two occupants apparently unharmed. Poignant said that officers were finishing setting up the barricades for the race when the car tried to crash through the barriers.

Authorities in Paris have been on maximum security alert since the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris earlier this year, when gunmen shot dead 17 people.
