Earlier this year, former World Champion Tom Boonen told the press that he is looking at retiring sometime in the “near future” but it looks like he will keep his competitive streak as he turns his attention to motorsport.

“It is one hundred percent sure that after my cycling career finishes, I will be involved in motorsport,” he told Het Nieuwsblad. “There are quite a few championships in Belgium where you can have fun as an amateur.”

“The ultimate goal is the 24 Hours of Zolder. It’s close to home, family and friends, I want to give it a go.”

The 24 Hours of Zolder is a sports car and touring car endurance race held at Circuit Zolder in Belgium where the 2002 World Cycling Championships were contested.

The 35 year-old said that he probably wouldn’t be retiring at the end of the 2016 season but might quit the following spring after his classics campaign.
