The Belgian coach Kevin de Weert has announced his selection for the Men’s Elite Road Race at the forthcoming World Championship in Qatar. Former World Champion Tom Boonen and Olympic Champion Greg van Avermaet are set be joint leaders for the team.

Besides leaders Boonen and Van Avermaet, the remainder of the selection consists of: Oliver Naesen (IAM Cycling), Jasper Stuyven (Trek Segafredo), Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto-Soudal), Jens Debusschere (Lotto-Soudal), Jens Keukeleire (ORICA Bike Exchange) , Iljo Keisse (Team Quick Step) and Nikolas Maes (Team Quick Step).

An absentee from the team who had been expected by some to form part of the line-up is Timothy Dupont. The Veranda Willems sprinter won sixteen races this year, but has been omitted from the team by De Weert. Another absentee is Sep Vanmarcke as the LottoNL-Jumbo rider is sick.

The Men’s Elite Road Race takes place on October 16. The riders will cover 257.5 kilometres which includes 7 laps of a 15.2-kilometre finishing circuit.
