In 1979, a French engineer named Monsieur “Gouzy” showcased an electric racing bike which he had developed.
The bike which had been produced by Bari Cycles utilised a battery-powered motor concealed in the frame. Monsieur “Gouzy” was a former regional champion cyclist himself and in the video, he describes the bike’s operation in detail.
The weight of the motor and batteries weighed about 2.5 kgs and provided 40W of power. It was controlled through a button placed near the brake levers.
Mr. “Gouzy” outlined that he felt the bike would not be suitable for professional cyclists, but instead that it was intended for use by recreational cyclists.
He also stated that he felt the bike would be especially useful “for women who want to follow their husbands.”
