Sean McKenna’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain Diary Stage 3 – Normanby Hall country park to Scunthorpe

Today was wet. It fairly lashed rain for the first hour and it was showers for the rest of the day. But rain doesn’t affect me too much, I don’t get too upset about it.

Thankfully the rain seemed to slow down the robots at the front a bit more and it was a bit more of a relaxed day. Unfortunately, we missed the break but these things happen so we were in the bunch all day and saving our legs for another day.

There was a King of the Mountains just before the finish. It was about 15kms from the end and the break was only at 40 seconds 10 kilometres beforehand so we tried to save (Jacob Scott) Scotty’s ambitions of getting the jersey.

Myself and (Damien) Shaw went up the front and got the break back to about 20 seconds at the bottom of the climb. In fairness to Scotty, who’s absolutely flying this week, he attacked and just got to the back of them but still managed to get a point. So, he’s second overall in the KOM competition now, just a few points behind (Graham) Briggs. He’s playing an absolute blinder.

Today didn’t get too hectic until about 5 kilometres to go as it was well controlled by Sky and then it was just a sprint. It was a slightly uphill finish so it suited (Matthew) Teggart well and he got a top-20 so a day that started out a bit rubbish by missing the break, we did get something from it.

Missing the break wasn’t the end of the world. Scotty’s still in with a shout for the King of the Mountains and there was a top-20 finish for Teggart. There were only Cat. 3s today so it would have taken a lot out of him to be in the break for the third day in a row. At least he saved his legs a bit and he can try and get points later in the week.

That’s cycling, you can’t get in the break every day, as we much as tried to. Hopefully, we’ll be fired up after today and ready to get back in the break tomorrow.
