68% of journeys in cities could be shifted from motor vehicles to bikes according to Professor Dr Cathy Macharis – Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. She outlined this at the European Cycle Logistics Conference in Spain

Macharis’ research group MOBI, short for Mobility, Logistics and Automotive Technology is an interdisciplinary group focusing on sustainable logistics, electric and hybrid vehicles and urban mobility. speaking

Cars and trucks are necessary for certain journeys in cities, according to Macharis, but many more trips could be done by bikes, ebikes, cargo bikes, & e-cargo-bikes.

Macharis has been involved in several regional, national and European research projects dealing with topics such as the implementation of innovative concepts for city distribution, assessment of policy measures in the field of logistics and sustainable mobility, development of a multi actor multi criteria analysis framework, etc.

”At ECF (European Cyclists’ Federation), we have been saying that 51% of urban trips in EU cities could be shifted from Cars and trucks and vans” said project manager Dr Randy Rzewnicki, citing the CycleLogistics study by sustainable transport experts at FGM-Amor in Austria.

“This work at the University of Brussels, combined with results from Amsterdam University suggests there’s significantly more potential to move goods by cycle.”
