Steve Cummings (Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka) was diagnosed with multiple fractures after suffering a bad crash on yesterday’s fourth stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco which forced the British rider to abandon the World Tour race.

X-ray examinations confirmed fractures on Cummings’ left collarbone and scapula as well as a sternum fracture. The 36-year-old Briton was set to lead the team in the Ardennes monument, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, later this month but he will now have to change his race schedule and re-focus on other goals.

“The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction,” confirmed Dr Jarrad Van Zuydam – Team Doctor.

“He will stay in hospital overnight to allow adequate pain management but we hope to transfer him by tomorrow and schedule the surgery in the next two days. If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks’ time with a gradual return as pain allows”.
